Multiple Social Tie Transitions and Their Impact On Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Aging Women and Men (MORE)
Principal Investigator
ABOUT
This project investigates the social causes of heart disease risk in older women and men using a large, national aging cohort in Canada (the CLSA). There are 3 objectives: (1) assess changes in obesity and hypertension over time in women and men by types of social tie transitions; (2) quantify how changes in different social ties impact these healthy aging indicators; and (3) explore the role of financial autonomy in social connectedness and cardiovascular risk.

Social Connectedness, Life Transitions, Gender, and Eating Habits: Longitudinal Study of a Canadian Ageing Cohort
Principal Investigator
ABOUT
This research will fill a critical gap in knowledge on the social tie transitions of middle and older age Canadians. Although an older body of literature exists on the experiences of marital transitions, little is known about the changes older people experience in living arrangement, social networks, or social participation from a gender perspective and from an intersectional lens of multiple social identities such as socioeconomic status differences or age subgroups. The proposed longitudinal population-based study will generate new insights on the social life transitions of older Canadians across multiple social identities and their effects on healthy eating habits, namely fruit and vegetable intake and no consumption of processed food.
